my Designs

paintings

I paint with acrylics as well as oil paints. Most of my paintings are abstract works and have a geometric bias. Recently I have been experimenting with making my own paints from raw pigments.

ceramics

I have been making pottery for approximately 20 years but not continuously over that time. Recently I started to rent out a ceramic studio space at the local Maze studios in Bristol. I make Earthenware (firing temperature range 1000-1100 degrees C) and Stoneware (firing temperature range 1220-1280 degrees C). The inspiration for my pots can be nature such the pod shaped pieces I make or can be very abstracted as in the straight lines that can be seen in much of my slab pottery. I would say that my pottery is sculptural in character, having little or no functional use whatsoever. I have a particular process that I use for slab pottery. I will start with rough drawings and if I like the look of a particular drawing, I will then produce a full-scale design. I roll out the clay and cut out my slabs using the templates from the full-scale drawing. I then assemble the piece, which might be made up of as many as 25 to 30 individual slabs. I use a heavily grogged (ground down fired ceramic powder) black clay which has a wide firing range and so may be fired either to earthenware or stoneware temperatures. Since the black clay has a strong metal content this tends to dominate over most coloured surface designs that utilize either underglazes of even normal glazes. As such before any surface design is added I will paint the piece in a light, usually white, slip (liquid clay with colorants added) before I start the surface design. Most of my work will end up being glazed and for this stage I utilize a spray application gun and spray booth with extraction unit.

ETCHING

I use a range of techniques for producing my prints including the following: dry point etching. Intaglio, aquatint, woodblock and screen-printing. As a member of Spike print studios in Bristol, I make use of the acid baths for intaglio as well as having access to a number of printing presses. For screen-printing, there is full wet room screen cleaning, photo emulsion application, UV exposure lamp and printing bed, facilities all of which I utilise. I also have a print bed set up at my home to be able to print at my leisure.
